New publication from LOBI. Molendowska M., Matuszewski J....and Marchewka A. Temporal Dynamics of Brain White Matter Plasticity in Sighted Subjects during Tactile Braille Learning: A Longitudinal Diffusion Tensor Imaging Study. Throughout the lifetime the human brain is shaped by various experiences. Training-induced reorganization in white matter (WM) microstructure has been reported, but we know little about its temporal dynamics. To fill this gap, we scanned sighted subjects five times during tactile braille reading training. We observed different dynamics of WM plasticity in the somatosensory and visual cortices implicated in braille reading. The former showed a continuous increase in WM tissue anisotropy along with tactile training, while microstructural changes in the latter were observed only after the participants learned to read braille words. Our results confirm the supplyÔÇôdemand model of brain plasticity and provide evidence that WM reorganization depends on distinct computational demands and functional roles of regions involved in the trained skill.

After great years at the Neuroplasticity Lab with Profesor Małgosia Kossut team, Kalina is moving her research from animal models of visual neuroplasticity to human clinical research and MRI environment at LOBI. In her team, Anna Kozak is involved in DTI analysis of neuroplasticity events upon retinal injury. Together with Marco Ninghetto they evaluated our novel acuity task based on motion perception (Kozak et al., 2021). Thanks to National Science Centre funding in consortium with Professor Jacek Szaflik, director of one of the major ophthalmological hospitals in Warsaw, Poland (Samodzielny Publiczny Kliniczny Szpital Okulistyczny), we explore the cortical reorganization triggered by retinal degenerations, Retinitis Pigmentosa and Stargardt disease.

Polish Returns Programme at the Nencki Institute

Dr Maciej Jurynczyk has obtained funding from the Polish Returns programme of the Polish National Agency for Academic Exchange to create a research group in the Laboratory of Brain Imaging at the Nencki Institute. His research project will aim at developing novel methods of magnetic resonance imaging to improve the diagnosis in patients with atypical forms of CNS demyelination. These patients are often challenging to diagnose while optimal diagnosis is essential as it allows to choose appropriate treatment and prevent long-term disability. Dr Jurynczyk will be able to use his several year research experience obtained in Nuffield Department of Clinical Neurosciences at the University of Oxford where he was involved in a number of pioneer studies aimed at optimising methods of differential diagnosis between multiple sclerosis, neuromyelitis optica and MOG-antibody associated disease.

The National Science Centre has announced the results of the GRIEG competition for research projects implemented jointly by research teams from Poland and Norway

One of the beneficiaries of the competition is Artur Marchewka. The project, entitled "Understanding patterns of emotional responses to climate change and their relation to mental health and climate action taking" aims to fill the gap in knowledge about emotions caused by climate change and their impact on mental health and pro-ecological behaviour. The project will be implemented in cooperation with Prof. Christian Andreas Kloecker from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology and Dr Jarosław Michałowski from the SWPS University of Social Sciences and Humanities.

Scientific awards of the Polish Academy of Sciences for the Nencki Institute

On 11 December 2019, in the Mirror Room of the Staszic Palace in Warsaw, the ceremony for awarding scientific prizes of the PAS Faculties and scholarships of the President of the Polish Academy of Sciences took place. The award of the II Faculty of Biological and Agricultural Sciences of the Polish Academy of Sciences went to the Scientific Team from the Nencki Institute: dr hab. Artur Marchewka, dr Katarzyna Siuda-Krzywicka, dr Katarzyna Jednoróg, dr Łukasz Bola (Nencki Institute/Institute of Psychology, Jagiellonian University), and dr hab. Marcin Szwed: "Research on inter-modal neuroplasticity, which proved the ability of the human adult brain to carry out plastic reorganisation on a large scale, finding the structural basis for this reorganisation and defining the principle governing inter-modal neuroplasticity.

New publication!

New publication from LOBI. Attenuated brain activity during error processing and punishment anticipation in procrastination ÔÇô a monetary Go/No-go fMRI study.  Marek Wypych and colleagues, using fMRI showed that people with high tendency to procrastinate have lower brain activity during error processing and punishment anticipation. These results suggest that impaired error processing may be related to difficulties in correction of faulty behaviors in procrastination.

Neurons in Action 2019

Neurons in Action 2019 is the 4th Nencki Symposium dedicated to plasticity of the nervous system. The symposium is a collaborative initiative of the research groups from the Institute. This year we will host scientists covering several themes we are fascinated by: neurobiology of spatial memory, emotions, addiction, social interactions, feeding, astrocytes, neuromuscular junctions and synaptic plasticity. NiA 2019 is aimed at PhD students, postdocs, older academics as well as all other fans of neurobiology. The syntactic-semantic analysis allows to distinguish language units and establish emotive meanings of not only the words used in any publication but also of phrases and the entire text.The emotional analysis includes 8 basic emotions and valence defined on two scales (polarization and stimulation) and can be applied to all words and meanings in Polish. The results of our analyzes, presented as a report, give you the way to decide which emotions are shown in the text, advertising, speech or can be associated with the author of the text.

I donÔÇÖt see, but I recognize ÔÇô how the brain recognizes faces without consciousness

Are the brain mechanisms of face recognition so effective, that they can work, even without the participation of consciousness? Is our brain able to recognize the identity of a given face, even when we are not aware of having seen any face at all? Prof. Anna Nowicka, from Laboratory of Language Neurobiology, and dr. Micha┼é Bola, from Laboratory of Brain Imaging, with their collaborators: Micha┼é W├│jcik and Maria Nowicka, attempted to answer this question in a study published recently in the prestigious journal Psychological Science (M. W├│jcik, M. Nowicka, M. Bola, A. Nowicka. (2019). Unconscious detection of oneÔÇÖs own image. Psychological Science, 30(4): 471-480. 10.1177/0956797618822971). The project was funded by the National Science Centre.

The study using MEGA-PRESS single-voxel spectroscopy accepted for publication in Scientific Reports! Congratulation to the team and the leading author Bartosz Kossowski!

We used MEGA-PRESS single-voxel spectroscopy in two ROIs: left temporo-parietal and occipital cortex in 36 adults and 52 children, where half in each group had dyslexia. Dyslexics, on average, had significantly lower total N-acetylaspartate (tNAA) than controls in the occipital cortex. Adults compared to children were characterized by higher choline and creatine in both areas, higher tNAA in left temporo-parietal and lower glutamate in the visual cortex, reflecting maturational changes in cortical microstructure and metabolism.

First PhD degree in LOBI for Monika Riegel

On the 19th of June Monika Riegel has defended with honours her PhD thesis entitled ÔÇťNeuronal mechanisms of associative memory of emotionally-charged verbal material-behavioural and fMRI studyÔÇŁ. The supervisor of her thesis was prof. dr hab. Anna Grabowska, and the auxiliary supervisor was dr hab. Artur Marchewka, prof. IBD. This was officially accepted by the Scientific Commitee of the Nencki Institute on the 29th of June, 2018. We are proud of the first doctor who grew up in the Laboratory of Brain Imaging. Until the end of 2018 Monika stays in Geneva for a research project under the supervision of prof. Patrik Vuilleumier (Universit├ę de Gen├Ęve, Switzerland). In 2019 she starts her postdoc under the supervision of prof. Lila Davachi (Columbia University, NYC, US). ┬áAcknowledgements from Monika: I would like to thank all the people who contributed to this thesis, for their help and support. First of all, I would like to express my gratitude to my supervisors, for accepting me as a doctoral student, for having confidence in me, for being understanding and supportive, and for numerous fruitful discussions about research. Horos plugin for BIDS output

We are happy to release our new plugin for Horos DICOM browser. The plugin will make it easier for us (and other Horos users) to organise our imaging datasets according to the Brain Imaging Data Structure, an emerging standard in the field. Using BIDS is a way to ensure that the data remains accessible and usable by different researchers over time, and to simplify automated data analysis, enhancing reproducibility and efficiency. The plugin started out as a project worked on by Michał Szczepanik during the 2nd Coding Sprint organized by Stanford Center for Reproducible Neuroscience. We are very grateful to CRN for creating a collaborative and inspiring atmosphere during the event. Code and binaries are available at Michał's GitHub.

Loss of consciousness is related to hyper-correlated gamma-band activity in anesthetized macaques and sleeping humans - Congratulation to international team and the leading autor Michał Bola!

Loss of consciousness can result from a wide range of causes, including natural sleep and pharmacologically induced anesthesia. Important insights might thus come from identifying neuronal mechanisms of loss and re-emergence of consciousness independent of a specific manipulation. We conclude that hyper-correlated gamma-band activity might be a signature of loss of consciousness common across various manipulations and independent of behavioral responsiveness.

Can pornography be addictive? An fMRI study of men seeking treatment for problematic pornography use. Congratulation to international team and the leading autor Mateusz Gola.

Pornography consumption is highly prevalent, particularly among young adult males. For some individuals, problematic pornography use (PPU) is a reason for seeking treatment. Despite the pervasiveness of pornography, PPU appears under-investigated, including with respect to the underlying neural mechanisms. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), we examined ventral striatal responses to erotic and monetary stimuli, disentangling cue-related ÔÇśwantingÔÇÖ from reward-related ÔÇślikingÔÇÖ among 28 heterosexual males seeking treatment for PPU and 24 heterosexual males without PPU.

Laboratory of Brain Imaging at Stanford Center for Reproducible Neuroscience 2nd coding sprint

A project submitted by us is among thirteen projects accepted for the 2nd CRN Coding Sprint. During the sprint, Micha┼é Szczepanik will spend 5 days working on a plugin for OsiriX, an MRI image viewer. This yearÔÇÖs sprint focuses on applications related to BIDS, a standard of organizing multiple files created in neuroimaging experiments proposed by Stanford researchers in 2016. The standard aims to facilitate data sharing and creation of standardized applications for data analysis.

Task-specific reorganization of the auditory cortex in deaf humans - Bola Ł, Zimmermann M, Mostowski P, Jednoróg K, Marchewka A, Rutkowski P, Szwed M. - Our recent work accepted in PNAS - chapeau!

What principles govern large-scale reorganization of the brain? In the blind, several visual regions preserve their task specificity but switch to tactile or auditory input. It remains open whether this type of reorganization is unique to the visual cortex or is a general mechanism in the brain. Here we asked deaf and hearing adults to discriminate between temporally complex sequences of stimuli during an fMRI experiment. We show that the same auditory regions were activated when deaf subjects performed the visual version of the task and when hearing subjects performed the auditory version of the task. Thus, switching sensory input while preserving the task specificity of recruited areas might be a general principle that guides cortical reorganization in the brain.

"Observational fear and safety learning in humans" - Learning the predictive value of cues through observing the responses of a conspecific (demonstrator) is common across species. This social, indirect, means of acquiring information might be especially advantageous in potentially dangerous environments. In contrast to learning through direct experiences, relatively little is known about the principles governing observational learning. I will present behavioral and physiological (fMRI) research examining human observational learning about events that are threatening (fear learning) and no longer threatening (safety learning).

Prof. Bharat Biswal - Department of Biomedical Engineering,NJIT and Department of Radiology, New Jersey Medical School Although long a condition of interest spanning the gamut of neuroimaging modalities, study of the ÔÇťnullÔÇŁ, ÔÇťfixationÔÇŁ or ÔÇťrestingÔÇŁ state has recently flourished. The fMRI community, in particular, has zealously embraced resting state approaches to mapping brain organization and function. Now, having demonstrated its utility for charting the large-scale functional architecture of the brain, and potential for the identification of biomarkers for clinical conditions, the field is returning to fundamental questions regarding the significance and validity of resting state (intrinsic brain) phenomena. Here, we discuss these challenges, and outline current developments.

After a long battle our work on Directed Forgetting and Basic Emotions is published. Congratulations to Monika Riegel, who was awarded a Preludium research grant from the National Science Centre Poland.
